Start of canoe race on Russian River, August 1964 Per newspaper article found in 8-5-1964 edition of Tribune: ""They're Off - Like the drivers in the famed Sebring race at Daytona Beach, the Jaycees make a run for their craft and head for Del Rio Woods Beach, 12 miles away. Some will get a good start; others do not, like flipping the canoes after being waterborne for only 50 feet. Two enterprising Jaycees tried a shortcut, carrying their canoe along the bank for a hundred yards and then launching it. The run was so hard on 'em they lost their breath and wound up in last place as the flotilla passed under the Alexander Valley Bridge. |
