Potential Puppy for Guide Dogs for the Blind, 1961 Per newspaper clipping affixed to back of photo: "It is a proud day for 4-H boys and girls when they see the dogs they have raised presented to their blind masters as full-fledged Guide Dogs. Pictured above Golden Retriever "Orlene" affectionately greets Reid Borgwardt, of Healdsburg after a four-months' separation. The dogs are born and raised to the age of 12 weeks on the 11-acre campus of Guide Dogs for the Blind, Inc., San Rafael, California. Then they are farmed lout to 4-H youngsters who raise them and teach them simple obedience and good manners. When the dogs are a year old they are returned to the school for an extensive program of training to become Guide Dogs for the Blind. There is no charge to the blind for the dogs and the organization is supported entirely by private contributions. This dog was presented to Miss Jane Mogren of Yakima, Washington at graduation exercises on August 19 in San Rafael." Published in Healdsburg Tribune, September 7, 1961 |
