Freak Wind Storm, 1962 Similar to photo 2009.30.0072. Per newspaper clipping on back of photo: "Freak Wind: A heavy wind "like a tornado", swept through the Healdsburg area last Thursday morning, particularly in the Chiquita Rd. section, causing some damage. Particularly affected was the patio roof and TV antenna at the Lloyd Johnson home, 1220 Chiquita Rd. The aluminum and fibre glass patio roof was lifted by the heavy wind, about 10:30 a.m. Thursday morning, and scattered, parts landing even across the road. The patio roof was anchored to concrete posts. Mrs. Johnson said that the house "just shook" from the heavy wind and pouring rain. One of the panels hit the Johnson's TV antenna (see photo). Mrs. Dorothy Burgess, a neighbor, said that she was sitting by her kitchen window when she saw the patio roof "fly over" the house roof. Mrs. Kave Kirkham of 812 Center Street reported hail along with the heavy rain in her area around 10:45 a.m. Thursday." Published in Healdsburg Tribune, March 29, 1962 |
