Barbecue pit at Villa picnic grounds at St. John's Fair, 1957 Per newspaper clipping affixed to back of photo: "Barbecue Pit at Villa Chanticler completed: A big double outdoor barbecue pit recently completed on the grounds of the Villa Chanticler has been donated to the City of Healdsburg by St. John's Catholic Church. The new barbecue pit cannot be put into use until the cement between the fire bricks has had time to set. Heading the work committee for the construction work was Eugene Ricci. Suitable for very large gatherings, the barbecue pit features two vertical grills which measure four feet by five feet. The height of the grills are adjustable by means of a crank. Made of Basalite brick on a reinforced concrete base, there is a four foot concrete apron completely around the pit. The pit is lined with fire brick. The sturdy construction of the pit will make it last for many years. Father Joseph Wise, C. R., right, front row, Bill Wolking, center, general chairman of St. John's Country Fair, and city councilman, R. L. Whitwell, left, give a hand in the construction of the pit. Volunteer workers, back row, left to right, are Louis Piper, Wayne Kuivala, Eugene Ricci, Robert Ricci, and Mel Butts. The barbecue pit will be used by the St. John's Country Fair when the annual Country Fair barbecued chicken dinner will be held on July 4, a part of the four day country fair celebration. The fair this year will take place on the grounds of the Villa Chanticler." Published in Healdsburg Tribune, June 20,1957 |
