Progress on Coyote Dam, March 1956 Per printed 'report' on back of photo: "5 March 1956. The construction of the $18,000,000 Russian River (Coyote Dam) Flood Control Project in Northern California, by the U. S. Army Corps of Engineer, officially gets under way with the delivery of a check for $5,598,000, the non-Federal contribution to the project. Although Congress appropriated Federal Funds to start construction this year, this check represents the "repayment" required by the authorizing Flood Control Act of 1950 for the benefits that will result from the supplementary water that Coyote Reservoir will provide for (1) supplying the urban centers of Santa Rosa, Petaluma, and adjacent areas; (2) augmenting existing water supplies for agricultural and commercial purposes; and (3) maintaining a minimum low flow in Russian River at Guerneville and other important resort areas for recreation and for the propagation of fish. Land acquisition for the project will be initiated immediately. A highway relocation contract with the State of California is ready for signature. A contract for supply of outlet gates for the dam will be advertised now. The main dam contract is expected to be advertised in May and awarded in June of this year. Secretary of the Army Wilber N. Brucker (R) and Congressman Hubert B. Scudder, California, look at the check after it was delivered to Secretary Brucker. The Pentagon, Washington, D.C." |
